Gay Marriage - Right?

What does the row about the Gay Marriage Bill, which is due to come before parliament on Tuesday, tell us about the 'modern' Tory party?  On one side of the fence we have the likes of Gove (one of the more effective ministers) he tells us - "It's wrong to say that because of how you love and who you love, you are not entitled to the same rights as others. It's wrong because inequality is wrong."

The 'Modern' Tory Party

On the other hand there are plenty in the Tory party who would line up with the 20 'senior Tories' who today delivered an admonishing letter to Dave.  This missive spells out the damage to “long-held religious and personal freedoms and the right to free speech” and more importantly the “significant damage” to the Party in the 2015 election.

The telegraph has more at - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/david-cameron/9845610/Grassroots-Tories-betrayed-by-David-Cameron-over-same-sex-marriage.html

I don't suppose Dave will be all that interested in what these 'dinosaurs' have to say.  Cameron believes that the real opposition he faces is the Right wing of his party, rather than the great unwashed from Islington.   Dave will have rationalised that to win next time he just needs to turn the economy around and that's about it.  He also knows that winning next time will not secure his future so he needs to weaken the Right wing quite urgently.  These winnable (non-economic) dalliances are designed to antagonise the Right, weakening them before the next election.  He knows that if he can't turn round the economy he will be out on his ear and no amount pandering to the grammar school boys in his party will save his skin. So we should expect more of this kind of thing over the next year or two - watching it should be fun!

The current divorce rate in the UK is 42% - just under half of all marriages fail.  It will be interesting to see how the Gay community get on with it!

The marriage vows from 1850:

............duly considering the causes for which Matrimony was ordained.

First, It was ordained for the procreation of children, to be brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord, and to the praise of his holy Name.

Secondly, It was ordained for a remedy against sin, and to avoid fornication; that such persons as have not the gift of continency might marry, and keep themselves undefiled members of Christ's body.

Thirdly, It was ordained for the mutual society, help, and comfort, that the one ought to have of the other, both in prosperity and adversity.

Strong stuff, most of it about sex!!
